Kaikoura is a coastal town located on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It’s known for its abundant wildlife and its sperm whale population.
The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway winds from the Town Centre to lookout points at Point Kean. Close by, the rock platforms are home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals. The 1800's Fyffe House is a cottage built on a foundation of whale bones, with displays on the town’s whaling past.
In town, the Kaikoura Museum and Archives has exhibits of marine fossils, photographs and Maori artifacts. Nearby, the Point Sheep Shearing Show features regular live shearing displays. At the wharf, the Kaikoura Marine Centre and Aquarium has touch tanks with sharks and seahorses, plus exhibits on regional marine life. To the west, the Kaikoura Farm Park offers the chance to and feed farm animals, plus ride llamas.
Mountainside trails crisscross the towering Kaikoura Ranges in the northwest, offering views of the coastline. To the northeast the Ohau Stream and Waterfall walking trail leads to seal pup colonies.
